Sungkon Kim
Baritone

Born in Seoul, South Korea, Sungkon Kim studied voice at Kyung-Hee University before continuing his training at the prestigious Hanns Eisler Academy of Music in Berlin.

His early career saw him perform at the renowned Young Artists Festival in Bayreuth, which led to a concert with the Brandenburg Symphony Orchestra. In 2007, he took part in the German premiere of Zdeněk Fibich’s opera Der Sturm (The Storm) at Theater Bielefeld and won several major competitions, including the Kammeroper Schloss Rheinsberg, where he impressed audiences as Mr. Ford in Falstaff. That same year, he was also recognized at the "Competizione dell’Opera" in Dresden and the Bertelsmann "Neue Stimmen" competition in Gütersloh.

Sungkon Kim made his debut at Oper Frankfurt in the 2007/08 season as Masetto in Don Giovanni and quickly became a member of the ensemble the following season. His standout performances have included Renato (Un ballo in maschera), Count Almaviva (Le nozze di Figaro), Papageno (Die Zauberflöte), and Frank/Fritz (Die tote Stadt). His role debut as Renato even led to a last-minute jump-in performance in Mannheim. He has also taken on modern and rarely performed works, such as Sebastian in Thomas Adès’ The Tempest and Bishop Ercole Severolus in Hans Pfitzner’s Palestrina (CD recording with Kirill Petrenko).

Between 2014 and 2016, he captivated audiences as Escamillo in Carmen and Count Almaviva in Le nozze di Figaro at Theater Osnabrück. In 2016, he returned to Seoul to perform Wolfram in Wagner’s Tannhäuser, further expanding his dramatic repertoire.

A passionate educator, Sungkon Kim has been sharing his expertise with young singers as a guest professor at Kyung-Hee University since 2019. In 2021, he made a highly successful operetta debut as Eisenstein in Johann Strauss’s Die Fledermaus. The following year, he showcased his artistry in German Lieder with a moving interpretation of Schubert’s Winterreise in a solo recital.

Beyond opera, Sungkon Kim is a sought-after concert soloist, having performed iconic works such as Bach’s Passions, Handel’s Messiah, Rossini’s Petite Messe Solennelle, Orff’s Carmina Burana, and Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony.

With his commanding stage presence, vocal versatility, and deep musicality, Sungkon Kim continues to make his mark on international opera and concert stages.
