Tian Jiang

Tian's tireless energy and boundless drive to attract new audiences to classical music have brought him to a wide range of music audiences. Thinking "outside the box" and frequent steps into different musical worlds, he has shared the same stage with legendary Philip Glass, and plays concerts at the prestigious Carnegie Hall and the Sydney Opera House, as well as a special performance at the Jerry Lewis Telethon -"Stars Across America" and at a sports arena in front of 20,000 people in China. lf one word applies to Tian Jiang, to the musician, to his worldview, it is "inspirational." It resounds like a musical motif through his life and concert career. He inspires audiences with open-hearted, emotive playing. 

Tian is an internationally renowned pianist, recognized for his signature colors in sound and over-the-edge thrilling virtuosity. His critically acclaimed North America debut at Carnegie Hall was praised by The New York Times as: "Shining, crisp, energetic and colorfully illuminated playing”.

Tian first came to international attention when he appeared with Vladimir Ashkenazy in a BBC film about his historic visit to China in 1980. A year later, Tian was one of the five young musicians chosen by Isaac Stern to come to the US and take part in the first cultural exchange program between China and the United States. Consequently, he studied at the San Francisco Conservatory of Music, and he finished his master degree at The Juilliard School with a full scholarship.

In 1997, Tian joined the Columbia Artists Management roster in New York City as a concert soloist. One year later, when he substituted for Arcadi Volodos at a Gala Concert in Los Angeles, playing an all Mozart’s program, Tian became an overnight success, and the invitations started to pour in. Daniel Cariaga in The Los Angeles Times characterized his playing as ''a deeply persuasive Mozartean'' saying that “Tian Jiang achieved an exquisite performance who delivers the full spectrum of the composer’s virtues - wit, pathos, brilliance, and serenity in this buoyant performance.”

Captivating audiences from North America to Europe to the Far East, Tian has been enthusiastically received in concerto appearances with the London Symphony Orchestra, the Boston Symphony Orchestra, the Los Angeles Philharmonic, the Hong Kong Philharmonic Orchestra, the Shanghai Symphony Orchestra. He is proud to be the first Chinese pianist to have toured his homeland with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra on its historic visit to China in 2000. He has collaborated with conductors such as Zubin Mehta, Daniele Gatti, Ettore Stratta, and Gerald Schwartz. In recital, he has performed in many of the music capitals in the world.

As a recording artist, Tian has 14 albums to his credit. Including a double CD album “Tian Jiang Live at Carnegie Hall - 2012 & 2013”. His original composition "Shanghai Dream" has been heralded by the World Music Reviews as "a slice of heaven”.

In 2018, Tian was honored to receive the Distinguished Alumni Achievement Award from the San Francisco Conservatory of Music for his outstanding service.

In 2019, Tian was invited to perform Beethoven’s "Emperor" piano concerto at Carnegie Hall as part of the 250 years of Beethoven’s celebration concert.

Most recently, Tian completed a highly successful China Tour as a soloist and toured 8 cities/11 concerts with the Wien Akustik Symphonie orchestra of Vienna under the directions of Maestro David Navarro-Turres and Maestro Rodolfo Saglimbeni. The performances were so well received and resulted into an immediate reengagement for the China National Tour in December, 2025. 

In the upcoming year, Tian’s schedule will take him all over the world, including concerto appearances with the Brussels Philharmonic Orchestra, Qatar Symphony Orchestra, the Wiener Royal Symphoniker and the Bangkok Symphony Orchestra. Since November 2024, Tian also serves as the international artistic advisor for the New York City Opera to create cultural exchange programs between the East and West.
