David Jerusalem
Bass-Baritone
David Jerusalem was born in Munich. He received his first musical training with the Windsbacher Knabenchor. He then completed his vocal studies with top marks in Nuremberg under Prof. Jan Hammar and his concert exam (with distinction) with Prof. Konrad Jarnot at the Robert-Schumann Hochschule in Düsseldorf. Numerous masterclasses with artists such as Brigitte Fassbaender, Dame Felicity Lott, Edith Wiens, Udo Reinemann, Irwin Gage, Rudolf Jansen, Tom Krause, Peter Schreier, and Rudolf Pirnay provided important impulses for the young singer.
While still studying, he performed numerous roles at the Kammeroper München and appeared at the Prinzregententheater München. After joining the opera studio of the Deutsche Oper am Rhein in Düsseldorf / Duisburg, David Jerusalem was directly taken on as a soloist in the permanent ensemble. Over his eight years at the company, he performed roles including Masetto (Mozart's "Don Giovanni"), Figaro (Mozart's "Le nozze di Figaro"), Sarastro (Mozart's "The Magic Flute" in the version for young listeners), Timur (Puccini's "Turandot"), Donner (Wagner's "Das Rheingold"), and Sparafucile (Verdi's "Rigoletto").
He has also appeared at the Festspielhaus Baden-Baden in Strauss's "Salome" with the DSO Berlin conducted by Stefan Soltesz, as well as in "Ariadne auf Naxos" with the Dresden Staatskapelle conducted by Christian Thielemann, and as a Geharnischter in Mozart's "The Magic Flute" with the Berliner Philharmoniker conducted by Sir Simon Rattle.
Further engagements include Gremin in Tchaikovsky's "Eugene Onegin" conducted by Michael Hofstetter at Theater Giessen, Angelo in Wagner's "Das Liebesverbot" conducted by Ivor Bolton at Teatro Real in Madrid, Timur in Puccini's "Turandot," Theseus in Britten's "A Midsummer Night's Dream" conducted by GMD Christopher Ward at Theater Aachen, and Creonte in Haydn's "Orfeo ed Euridice" conducted by Adam Fischer in Copenhagen and at the Theater an der Wien.
David Jerusalem has had the opportunity to showcase his concert repertoire under distinguished conductors, such as performing Haydn's "The Creation" with the Orquesta Sinfónica y Coro RTVE under Jaime Martin at Teatro Monumental in Madrid and the Danish Chamber Orchestra under Adam Fischer, as well as "The St. Matthew Passion" (Bach) with the Noord Nederlands Orkest under Michael Hofstetter on a tour of Holland. A special highlight was collaborating with Sir Neville Marriner and the Academy of St. Martin in the Fields on a tour celebrating Marriner's 90th birthday.
His extensive partnership with pianist Eric Schneider has shaped his work, evidenced by their solo debut CD "In Erlkönigs Reich" featuring ballads by Schubert and Loewe. Released by Hänssler Classic in cooperation with Deutschlandradio, the album received the Supersonic Award and was nominated for the ICMA 2018 as Best Vocal Album.
