Julio Castañeda was born in La Orotava in 1981. He began his studies at the Orotava Music Association Academy. Later he entered the Superior Conservatory of Music of Santa Cruz de Tenerife. In this period, he finished the specialty of saxophone, in which he obtained the professional title of music.
His career as a conductor started with the courses taught with José Rafael Pascual Vilaplana (Valencia). Shortly after, he attended classes with other conductors and composers such as Amando Blanquer (Valencia), Jan Cober (Holland), Jan van der Roost (Belgium), Johan de Meij (Holland) and Franco Cesarini (Italy) among others. These courses have been held both in the Canary Islands, Spain and in some European countries.
He has a degree in orchestral and band conducting from the ABRSM in London. He has completed a master degree in orchestral and band conducting with the Maestro Navarro Lara School of Conducting, one of the most prestigious schools in Spain, under the direction of Maestro Francisco Navarro Lara.
Mr. Castañeda has worked with important world-famous conductors, including the following activities: In 2001 he was invited by the Spanish director and composer, Mr. Cristóbal Halffter to work with him, and the Madrid Symphony Orchestra and the National Choir from Spain, at the premiere of the work "Oficium Defoctuorum" by Cristóbal Halffter himself.
In 2004 he was invited by Sir Charles Mackerras and Joseph Swensen to attend his rehearsals in Scotland with the Scottish Chamber Orchestra.
Julio Castañeda has been conductor of the Philharmonic Band of the Realejos, and of the Banda Sinfónica "Aguere" de San Cristóbal de La Laguna, a band with which he participated in the International City of Valencia Music Bands Contest and in which he obtained the 2nd prize.
He is conductor of La Agrupación Musical Orotava and conductor of the Academia de Estudios Musicales Ángel Hdez. Hdez. of the Orotava Musical Group.
He is the founder and conductor of the Villa de la Orotava Chamber Music Festival and the "Ensemble Villa de La Orotava" Orchestra. A festival that will celebrate its 15th edition in 2021, a prestigious and ambitious project already established in the musical scene of the Canary Islands.
Within this festival he has conducted, among other works, the premieres of the works "Shamán" by Gustavo Trujillo, Professor of Composition at the Amsterdam and Rotterdam Conservatory, and "Ecliptique" by Dori Díaz, Professor of Composition at the Conservatorio Superior de Música de Canarias. In addition, he recorded music by composers of the 19th century with ATADEM - Friends of Classic Music Association of Tenerife.
Mr Castañeda has also been conductor of the Orquesta Gran Partita, an orchestra made up of professionals from all over the Canary Islands formed to carry out a tour of the Canary Islands with the staging of works by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart that gave the group its name.
He also maintains a relationship with the world of film music, as he has been a guest conductor of FIMUCITE (Tenerife Film Music Festival) and of its orchestra: Tenerife Film Orchestra.
He has conducted the Symphonic Orchestra and Band of the Conservatorio Superior de Canarias and the Orquesta Sinfónica de Tenerife among other formations.
Julio Castañeda has been a teacher of orchestra and band at the Conservatory of Tenerife.
One of his highlights was his trip to Italy in 2006 as a young conductor on the occasion of the invitation of Claudio Abbado and the Gustav Mahler Orchestra.
