Born in Bonn, she was accepted as a full student at the Cologne Hochschule für Musik und Tanz at the age of only 15. After completing her degree in instrumental performance under Professor Roswitha Gediga, she became a student of Russian-born pianist and conductor Eduard Zilberkant, continuing her academic studies with a full scholarship at the University of Alaska in the United States.
Master classes with Paul Badura-Skoda, Menahem Pressler, Jerome Rose, Massimiliano Ferrati and Rose Marie Zartner ensued. Following her Master of Music in Piano Performance, Gerl was an assistant at the Catholic University of America, where she studied in the doctoral program under Nikita Fitenko, until the end of 2012.
