Anne-Marie McDermott
Pianist

Anne-Marie McDermott is recognized as a leading American pianist of her generation. Her career spans the United States, Europe, and Asia, with appearances as concerto soloist, recitalist, and chamber musician. Widely admired for range and insight, she has built an international profile both on stage and as an artistic leader.

She serves as Artistic Director of the Bravo! Vail Music Festival in Colorado through 2026, presenting major orchestras and artists each summer. She also directs the Ocean Reef Chamber Music Festival in Florida and the chamber music festival at the McKnight Center for the Performing Arts at Oklahoma State University. Earlier, she curated the Mainly Mozart Spotlight Series in San Diego.

2025–26 highlights include a U.S. tour with the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center (including Alice Tully Hall, New York); Beethoven Piano Concertos Nos. 2 and 4 with the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra under Otto Tausk; a duo program with violinist Richard Lin at Rose Studio featuring Mozart, Brahms, Fauré, and Paul Schoenfield; a tour of Spain and Portugal; a recital in Lima for the Sociedad Filarmónica; appearances with the Saint Paul Chamber Orchestra; and Beethoven’s Piano Concerto No. 5, Emperor, with the North Carolina Symphony led by Carlos Miguel Prieto.

Recent season engagements included Amy Beach’s Piano Concerto with the Dallas Symphony Orchestra and the Springfield Symphony (MA); Beethoven’s Fourth Concerto with the Paducah Symphony (KY); the First Concerto with the Des Moines and Palm Beach symphonies; performances with the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center at Alice Tully Hall and on tour in Chicago, Grand Rapids, Kansas City, Ashland (OR), and Vienna (VA); Messiaen’s Quartet for the End of Time in a special chamber program at the New World Symphony in Miami Beach; appearances with the SPA Trio (soprano Susanna Phillips and violist Paul Neubauer) at Rockefeller University and Arizona Friends of Chamber Music; and chamber music at the McKnight Center in Stillwater (OK).

In earlier seasons she performed with the Los Angeles Chamber Orchestra and the Saint Paul Chamber Orchestra—both leading to immediate return invitations—and with the New York Philharmonic in Mozart at the McKnight Center. International highlights include a recital at Piano aux Jacobins in Toulouse, performances with the São Paulo Symphony at the Cartagena International Music Festival, and an all-Haydn recital tour of China.

Repertoire & recordings: McDermott’s repertoire ranges from Bach, Haydn, and Beethoven to Rachmaninoff, Prokofiev, and Scriabin, alongside works by leading contemporary composers. She is currently recording the complete Beethoven piano concertos with the Orquesta Sinfónica de Minería (Mexico City) under Carlos Miguel Prieto. Her discography includes the complete Prokofiev sonatas; solo works by Chopin; Bach’s English Suites and Partitas (named Gramophone Editor’s Choice); Gershwin’s complete works for piano and orchestra with the Dallas Symphony (also Editor’s Choice); Mozart concertos with the Calder Quartet; and Haydn recordings with the Odense Philharmonic—five piano sonatas and two concertos, featuring cadenzas by the late American composer Charles Wuorinen.

Additional recent projects include the New Century Chamber Orchestra’s Silver Jubilee all-Gershwin program; a Beethoven concerto cycle at Santa Fe Pro Musica; the premiere and recording of a new concerto by Danish composer Poul Ruders with the Vancouver Symphony (paired with Rachmaninoff’s Rhapsody on a Theme of Paganini); a return to Gershwin with the New York Philharmonic at Bravo! Vail; Mozart’s Concerto in B-flat, K. 595, with The Philadelphia Orchestra under Sir Donald Runnicles; Bach’s D-minor concerto with members of The Philadelphia Orchestra; and Bach’s Brandenburg No. 5 with New York City-based Le Train Bleu.

She has appeared with many leading ensembles, among them the New York Philharmonic, Minnesota Orchestra, Hong Kong Philharmonic, National Symphony Orchestra, Los Angeles Chamber Orchestra, and the symphonies of Dallas, Seattle, Houston, Colorado, Pittsburgh, St. Louis, Atlanta, San Diego, New Jersey, Columbus, and Baltimore, and has toured with the Australian Chamber Orchestra and the Moscow Virtuosi.

Awards: McDermott is a recipient of the Avery Fisher Career Grant, winner of the Young Concert Artists auditions, and a Mortimer Levitt Career Development Award for Women. In 2024 she received an Honorary Doctorate from the Manhattan School of Music, where she studied. She lives in New York City with her husband, Michael.
